Small Vessel Tracking Trials a Success in South Africa

Harwell, Oxon – June 21, 2016 – exactEarth Europe Limited, a UK subsidiary of exactEarth Ltd, the leading provider of Satellite AIS data services, recently successfully concluded the main part of its ‘South Africa Safety Initiative for Small Vessels’ (OASIS) project – a small vessel tracking trial with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), part-funded by the UK Space Agency (UKSA) under its ‘International Partnership Space Programme’ (IPSP).

UCL Energy Institute in the UK set out to create an interactive map experience ( showing vessel movement data from exactEarth, cross-checking the information with other databases to look at vessel characteristics such as engine type and hull measurements. This allowed the team to compute the CO2 emissions for each observed hour, following the approach taken in the Third IMO Greenhouse Gas Study in 2014.
