exactEarth Celebrates 6th Anniversary of First AIS Satellite Launch

Cambridge, ON – June 17, 2014 – exactEarth Ltd., the leading provider of global satellite AIS data services, recently celebrated the 6 year launch anniversary of its first dedicated AIS satellite-NTS. NTS was launched from Sriharikota, India on the PSLV-A1 rocket on April 28, 2008 and was originally built as an experimental AIS payload with a design life of 3 months. The satellite continues to be in good health today and has now completed 2235 days and 33100 orbits of the earth.

NTS quickly matured from a simple demonstration concept to an operational mission to support two very high profile events. NTS provided daily shipping traffic data off the waters around Vancouver to the Canadian Government during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Later that summer it was tasked to cover South African waters during the 2010 World Cup. NTS was used extensively in the early stages of the exactView constellation but with the successful addition of 5 more technologically advanced satellites, it is now used primarily for research and development purposes.

The exactView constellation continues to grow with additional launches and ground stations scheduled throughout the coming year to create the most robust Satellite AIS system commercially available.

"We could not have been happier with what NTS has been able to achieve", said Peter Mabson, President of exactEarth. "Now, looking forward, we are committed to expanding the most robust Satellite AIS constellation available to ensure our customers receive the highest quality, timely and most up to date maritime information possible. When NTS was launched it took nearly 3 months to map the world's shipping traffic with the high detection quality exactEarth offers today every few hours. When our constellation and ground station deployment is complete we will do so every hour and make the information available to our customers in minutes."
