13 Fisherman Missing After Vessels Collide off Japan
SEPTEMBER 24, 2012
The Japanese Coast Guard has reported that 13 crew members are missing from a 22-man fishing vessel after a collision with a much larger cargo ship off northeast Japan. The smaller 119-tonne Horiei Maru collided with the 25,047-tonne Nikkei Tiger about 900 kilometres east of Sendai around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
An official at the Shiogama Coast Guard office near Sendai said the smaller vessel may have sunk. The Coast Guard has now sent two planes to look for survivors.
The 21 crew members aboard the Nikkei Tiger were reportedly uninjured.
