Security

Once received, exactAIS™ data is fully encrypted at all stages, from the satellite downlink to the distribution to end users. The data processing centre is a secure facility with access to the data feed restricted to authorized users only. Please see Data Processing Centre.

Encryption and Data Security

While AIS signals are transmitted from ships un-encrypted, once combined into a global maritime picture the data becomes more sensitive and must be protected during further transmission, processing and storage.

exactAIS™ data is encrypted at all phases of transmission, from the satellite transmissions, over the backhaul network, and right through to delivery to the end user. Our data centre is in a fully secure facility, and system security is constantly monitored.

The messages are sent over an encrypted link to the customer in standard NMEA 0183 format (or in other customized formats such as OTH Gold).   All links in this entire network – from satellite to ground station to data centre to customer – are encrypted to maintain data security.

Competent Maritime Authorities

exactEarth’s AIS data is distributed to authorized users only. Organizations that meet the criteria of a “competent maritime authority”, as defined by the International Maritime Organization, are eligible to subscribe to the exactAIS™ service.

There are strict controls on the distribution of the data. For example, a competent maritime authority from a particular country is eligible to receive data on the following Class-A AIS-equipped vessels:

  • All vessels within 1,000 nautical miles of that country’s coastline
  • All vessels carrying that country’s flag
  • All vessels destined for ports in that country

exactEarth continues to work with international regulatory and export authorities to develop the appropriate regulatory and data policy framework to ensure the security of its AIS data.
