"Mayday" airs Friday, Sept. 30, at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC TV.

Indian Navy Thwarts Two Pirate Attacks

September 26, 2011
Attacks by Somali pirates on two cargo ships in the Gulf of Aden were stopped by an Indian Navy warship last week. The INS Sukanya deployed its marine commandos and a helicopter to ward off the sea bandits approaching the two merchant ships, Conqueror and Fairchem Bronco. The pirates were on high-speed skiffs and made threatening approaches towards the two ships. Although it was dark, the Sunkanya crew detected the skiffs and warned the speed boats off by radio. When the pirates did not heed the warning, Sunkanya launched her own high-speed boat with commandos to investigate. The commandos recovered arms and ammunition in the skiffs before rendering them ineffective for carrying out any further piracy action.

BC Ferry Rescues 22 Passengers Aboard Unmoored Fishing Lodge

September 19, 2011
A group of 22 passengers aboard a luxury floating resort had their stay end abruptly when high winds left the structure hanging by just one anchor. The ferry, Northern Adventure, was brought in for the rescue as it was just 35 minutes away on its regular Port Hardy to Prince Rupert route. Winds over 50 knots battered the resort off almost all its moorings and forced the guests onto the Northern Adventure.

“Thankfully there were no injuries of any of the people transferred from the fishing lodge to our vessel,” said BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall. “I did speak to the captain and chief steward and they did say that the passengers were in good spirits.”
